What is time freedom? How can business owners achieve it?

According to Betty Taylor, a women’s empowerment coach, the simple definition of time freedom is “simply having the time to do the things you want to do, apart from everything you need to do.”

If you feel like you’re constantly on the clock even when you’re supposed to be off, chances are you DON’T have time freedom in your business, even if you’re working from home!

Let’s get started! 😉

What is time freedom?

Time freedom means being the boss of your own time, both at work and at home.

It’s not just about cutting down your work hours or choosing to work at home. It’s also about making smart choices so you get more done in less time 💯

This way, you’re not always stuck at your desk and can enjoy life more!

Having time freedom means you’re able to work when you feel most awake and ready to tackle tasks, making your work fit into your life and not the other way around.

This helps you work in a way that suits YOU best, making sure you’re doing your best work.

A big part of time freedom is making sure work doesn’t sneak up and take over your whole life. Setting clear lines between work time and personal time helps you do this so you can relax, have fun, and recharge.

Our CEO and Founder, Linh Podetti, can tell you more about her first-hand experience with time freedom as a business owner.

My journey to time freedom as a business owner

Early on in my life, I had a 9-to-5 corporate job.

However, deep down, I couldn’t shake the feeling that this repetitive work and time away from my son didn’t align with what truly mattered to me.

Despite being a broke single mum in my 20s, I took a leap of faith and bid farewell to my day job, using my last $5,000 to start my first business.

I craved the time to pursue my passions and be there for my son. Flexibility to live life on my own terms was what I truly wanted.

That’s when I took a leap of faith in starting my first business, using my last $5,000. Now, I have a business that runs itself!

From having to oversee things every day and having to do everything on my own, I have finally reached a point where I can step back and enjoy my newfound time freedom.

Thanks to my capable team and the systems we have built, I could even remove myself from the day-to-day running of the business.

I take immense pride in having created a meaningful business that now allows me to live intentionally. I now have the time freedom to focus on what I truly love, such as spending time with my family and exploring the world.

Why does time freedom matter and how you can achieve it at work?

Time freedom matters because it’s all about having the freedom to decide when and how you work, so you’re not feeling trapped by your job 😬

This concept is important when put into practice, because it lets you:

  • enjoy life more
  • spend more time with your family
  • or dive into hobbies without feeling guilty or stressed!

Here are 4 ways you can start achieving time freedom:

1. Prioritise your tasks 📋

Start by identifying what needs to be done first. You can focus on tasks that have the biggest impact on your work and do them when you’re most productive.

You can even learn to say ‘no’! Not every request or meeting will be worth your time. So be selective of where you dedicate your attention.

For example, admin services for small businesses might not be a great use of your time. But reviewing your list of business systems might help you scale operations faster!

As they say: where energy goes, energy flows.

2. Embrace flexibility 🕒

In your current setup, adjust your work hours to when you feel most energetic and focused.

This taps into your natural circadian rhythm, which is your body’s internal clock that influences your alertness and sleepiness throughout the day. Working in sync with your circadian rhythm can significantly boost your productivity and overall well-being 👌

Working from different locations from time to time for a change of scenery can also boost your creativity and mood.

Instead of just working at your home desk all the time, you can tap into the location flexibility available to you (if you’re in a work-from-home or hybrid setup.)

3. Make technology work for you 🚀

Using apps and tools to automate repetitive tasks helps you take care of manual tasks in the background, like scheduling or sorting emails.

This way, you don’t have to dedicate time and effort to these low-impact tasks.

You can instead focus on value-adding activities such as client management, improving your sales pipeline and more.

You can also streamline communication by setting up Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)! This helps you stay in touch with your team efficiently, minimising unnecessary meetings.

4. Set clear boundaries 🚧

Work-life separation is easier said than done. But you have to clearly define when you’re working and when you’re off and stick to it to avoid burnout!

Setting clear boundaries also means managing expectations.

Let your team know your availability and how you prefer to work to help prevent misunderstandings and work even better with them moving forward.

By focusing on these strategies, you can:

  • gain more control over your workday
  • reduce stress
  • and find a better balance between your professional and personal life ⚖️

Other types of freedom you can pursue at work

Time freedom is a great advantage for business owners. But there are other types of freedom you can have at your workplace! 👍

Here are 2 other key areas where you can have freedom as an entrepreneur:

1. Location freedom

This is the flexibility to work from anywhere—from your home, your favourite café, or even halfway across the world.

Linh Podetti, our CEO and Founder, went to a work retreat in Culburra Beach, Australia, back in 2023. She takes full advantage of her location freedom!

Location freedom enriches your work life by allowing you to choose environments that inspire and motivate you, leading to enhanced creativity and productivity.

It also opens up the opportunity to balance work with travel! You can explore new cultures and experiences without sacrificing your professional responsibilities ❣️

Here is a short comparison between location freedom and time freedom:

Location Freedom

Time Freedom

Ability to work from anywhere in the world

Not tied to a traditional 9-to-5 workday

Travel without interrupting work or business operations

Spend more hours on what matters most (family, health, passion projects)

You may have flexibility of place but not necessarily flexibility of schedule

Requires systems, delegation, and reliable support

Choose environments that inspire productivity and creativity

Enables true rest, recovery, and long-term sustainability

2. Financial freedom

Having financial freedom means having the resources to support your desired lifestyle without ongoing, active labour.

This is the primary reason people become business owners.

With financial freedom comes peace of mind, knowing that you can meet your needs and indulge in your wants without the constant pressure of earning more money.

It also offers the flexibility to invest time in passions and projects that matter most to you, beyond just working for a paycheck.

For example, your business could also be funding donations and charity projects on top of generating profit.

Here is another short comparison, this time between financial freedom and time freedom:

Financial Freedom

Time Freedom

Enough income to cover needs, wants, and investments

Ability to own your calendar instead of working around it

Still possible to feel burnt out if time is not protected

True success, when combined with financial freedom

Creates peace of mind and security

Enables balance—rest, travel, hobbies, family time

Business profits don’t depend on every hour you personally work

Often unlocked through delegation, automation, and outsourcing

Time freedom expands your purpose

Time freedom isn’t just about working less; it’s about reclaiming your life so you can focus on what truly matters to you. When you’re no longer trapped by the daily grind, you gain the space to think bigger and live more meaningfully! ☺️

Everything you want becomes possible when you stop trying to do everything yourself in your business and start building the right support around you.
